Aurora Borealus

 

They say the ancestors live in the great Star Nation high above us.

They watch over us and speak in the wind.

Sometimes they come in a cloud of beauty...

to show us they think of us,

and to remind us to look up and see Creator's love painted in the sky.

Some say that after the great and beautiful Thunderbird was punished for being so vain,

he was banished to live beyond the clouds so that his beauty would remain hidden.,

The story goes on to say that in Creator's kindness,

every so often, he allows Thunderbird to come in the night sky,

adorned in the Aurora Borealus so that we may see his beauty still.

I have stood on a mountain with a great medicine woman from the Cree nation,

as she sang and called down the lights around us.

There was the feeling of great love in the lights.

You could hear the ancestor's prayers, feel their goodness toward us,

and tap into the pulse of the universe.

You could feel Thunderbird's mighty power in the pit of your stomach and reach out and touch him.

 I will never forget that night.
