Caterpillar Fungus – Cordyceps Sinensis

It is an expensive medicinal mushroom that grows on caterpillars. Found in Tibet and adjacent areas and long valued in China. Recent studies show anti-viral, anti-tumor, immune-enhancing, blood pressure reducing, cardiovascular, cholesterol-reducing, kidney tonic, increased libido, increased blood flow (used by some to improve sexual and athletic performance); also used to treat asthma, liver ailments, and fights cancer.  

Cordycepin has many biological and pharmacological actions in immunological, hepatic, renal, cardiovascular systems as well as an anti-cancer agent. At present, local folk practitioners use the product alone or in combination with other medicinal herbs to treat various diseases.

Cordyceps have been shown to inhibit the growth of many types of human cancer cells, including lung, colon, skin and liver cancers. Cordyceps have anti-tumor effects on lymphoma, melanoma and lung cancer. Cordyceps may keep blood sugar levels within a healthy range by mimicking the action of insulin.

In several studies in diabetic mice, Cordyceps has been shown to decrease blood sugar levels.

Some evidence suggests that they may also protect against kidney disease, a common complication of diabetes.
