Arrogant. Superiority Complex. Pretentious. Pseudo-intellectual.
I know the accusations have passed me a number of times, and probably more often than I know. I won't lie, though. I am arrogant, but I don't think I'm superior, I certainly don't play up some façade, and I don't speak on any subject unless I'm knowledgeable in it.
I like to think there's two kinds of arrogance. There's the kind that is boastful, snide, and charismatic as it stomps upon "lesser forms" toward some penultimate prize; and then there's the kind that embraces itself as it is, not pretending to be more than its Self, and not reducing its Self as if doing so actually respects those who have not reached his/her achievements or wisdom. I believe everyone is capable of genius, and to dumb down your words for anyone's sake is insulting to their intelligence.
Boastful arrogance dangles its rewards at those still on their way up as if it believes no one is capable of equal or greater value or merit. Mindful arrogance is steadfast and receptive. It assures others of their potential and encourages them to even surpass its own victories and exploits.
So, yes, I will claim to be a great writer, because I am. I will claim to be a remarkably talented photographer, pianist, and artist, because I am. Am I claiming that I am better than anyone? Generally, of course not, but we're all on some level above or below another in what we've learned, taught ourselves, practiced, studied, and so on.
No one should ever feel intimidated by someone above them in merit, or knowledge, or deed. We all tread our paths at different speeds, but we're all quite capable of the same genius. It's all a matter of how willing and determined you are to get there; to allow for criticism and refining; and to be open to the possibility that maybe one talent should be honed more than another.
Whichever your greatest talent is, go with it, and never be afraid to own up to it (or them) with a well-deserved sense of accomplishment. The social norm is to look down upon self-ownership and self-love as if humility is a virtue. Humility is what allows opportunity to slip by time and time again.
But see, you are amazing. Let it shine, and share that light with others. Maybe one day the world will be filled with amazing people who know it and show it; people who continue to inspire others to be amazing along with them. Never, ever sell yourself short.
And now a fun poem I made up:
Doubt is but the Devil's lark,
Keep you ambling in the dark
Yield not to that umbral guise
And poke the Devil 'tween the eyes!
