Do you think it is possible for time to stand still? Do you think it is possible to see beyond living things, to extend your senses? I’d like to show you my garden and you see if you can see it too.
As I sit on the bench, I can feel the wooden planks under me and feel the roughness of the ornate iron work. As I rub my hand over the roundness of the arm rest, my hand can feel the pitting of the rust that slowly over time, eats away at the metal. It creeps slowly, consuming and covering, leaving an orange tint on the metallic arm.
From my seat, I look out into the garden. My dog Tiny is running around my feet excitedly, watching the birds flying overhead. The next thing my eyes are drawn to is the rustic gate and arch leading into the main part of the garden, the living part.
There is a stone path forming a cross and around this cross is a circle broken into four quarters. There are plants in these quarters. The first one has small little delicate pink star-shaped flowers that sit right on the edge of the branches, almost like they are reaching up to heaven or smiling up at the sky. They look so small and yet en masse, they bring a smile to my face with their playfulness and jollity.
Next to these is one of my favourite plants and I am convinced the Creator was in a great mood when he/she made these. Lavender. They form little blue/grey clumps and when you brush past them, the scent makes you feel you belong in a different place, like you are no longer of this world. It is such a well known scent that I am tempted not to go into detail but my passion for this plant makes me feel bad if I don’t. The tender spikes of flowers that tease the bees in the wind smell so sweet and succulent, it makes my heart full. I feel such great emotion when I see this plant because it lifts my heart, allowing it to soar beyond this reality. It calms and soothes me. It makes me feel comforted.
Then sit and watch the bees play among the flowers. They land so gently on them that they barely move! They hover and fly between them, picking the most succulent ones for their pollen. Go down deeper into the clump and see the life hurrying and scurrying about to hide from your gaze down at the soil level. Worms, beetles, ants, all busy about their business.
The lime green of the new leaves on the Box hedging makes a gorgeous contrast to the cool blue/grey of the lavender. Look how deep the older leaves are in comparison to the brightness of the new ones. How soft and flimsy the new growth is to touch and so soft and silky.
Listen! What can you hear? Has all gone silent yet? Or can you hear more than you realised? What can you hear in the garden next door…and three doors down? The end of the row? Can you hear that bee buzzing at the end of the garden playing amongst the flowers of the Rosemary bush? Surely not, he’s too far away but try and listen, maybe you CAN hear him humming on his merry way? Can you hear that thrush sitting on the roof a few houses away singing his heart out?
Can you feel her heart beating under your feet? The soft caressing pulse of the earth’s heart, of life in all its cycles oblivious to you and yet, a part of you, taking place.
Extend your whole being into sensing this life you are part of…this song played out on this planet we live and die on. This is magic. To feel a part of this whole existence is magical. To know that at the loneliest times in your life, you aren’t alone. Ever.
Just more of my inner musings..........
