No, I don't believe you sound vulgar ... and yes, I do believe you.
The name of the game in animals as accessories is the tinier, the better. I do not believe they 'see' animals as a 'real' living sentients. They do feed and give them water only for the purpose of keeping their 'ornaments' alive. There has also been a trend to use live insects, like the Madagascar Hissing Cockroach with gems glued on its body, as an expensive 'living gem' chained to a jacket or coat.
