This ancient king was the son of Hephaestus and the Goddess.

There are various legends associated with the origins of the Serpent King, Erichthonius; son of Athena and Gaia. One legend states that he was simply born of the Earth; another, that Hephaestus attempted to rape Athena. This is basically impossible , as the Goddess of Justice would never permit such an event to happen. Whenever a myth speaks of rape  of a Goddess by a dominant male God, one can be sure that the myth has been altered by patriarchal authors to show a bias against the Old Gods and also to portray the various aspects of the Divine Feminine as weak and secondary in power to the male Gods.

Anyhow, Hephaestus fails in his attempt – he misses altogether, and the semen is poured on the Earth; or wiped off Athena’s thigh with a piece of wool and thrown down upon the ground.

This impregnates Gaia; and it is definitely an unwanted pregnancy!

As soon as the child is born ~ and he is born with a serpent’s tail and a human upper half, as a Naga ~ Gaia gives the newborn back to Athena.

Athena raises the infant Serpent King as Her own, in one account. In another, Erichthonius, whose Name means, “troubles born of the Earth” is placed in a box .

Although the box, or Cube is generally thought of as a male symbol, and has a direct correspondence to the very ancient sacred number 666, a solar number of the God of Nature, and not that of  a mythical, post-christianity patriarchal devil at all.

The box is actually a feminine symbol, and contains secrets of the earth and cosmos when sealed. Only when a seeker is ready to receive Divine Wisdom, will the box be opened for hir benefit.

6+ 6+ 6 = 18 = 1+ 8 = 9, the number of the Divine Feminine!

Patience and discernment are virtues which must be self-taught; for without these, the journey will be a hard and frustrating one.

The box is entrusted to the care of three sisters, the daughters of Cecrops the King of Athens;  namely Aglaulus, Herse and Pandrosus;  with strict instructions never to open the sealed box, which later became known as Pandora’s box.

The three sisters were sworn to keep it safe and closed at all costs .

Naturally, curiosity eventually took over , and the princesses opened the box, releasing Erichthonius. In all accounts of the story, the two sisters, Aglaulus and Herse literally go mad after opening the box, committing suicide immediately thereafter; while Pandrosus, or Pandora is unharmed, as she is the only one who resists the temptation to defy the will of the Goddess and break an oath and solemn promise.

Now, while  Goddess Athena had left the box in the care of the sisters, She was far away in the Atlas mountains  searching for a suitable mountain to bring back home to the Acropolis,  for use in landscaping the area and surrounds.

Having first consulted with Her Triple Goddess sisters Medusa and Neith ; Athena found and selected the ideal-sized mountain, which would have looked just right , framed in a vista by avenues of cypress and cedar and forming a backdrop to the Acropolis.  Athena was on Her way back, concentrating to maintain the mountain’s  bearing and velocity;  when unexpectedly, the news was broken and it was made known by a Crow which had seen what had happened, that Her trust had been betrayed and the box, containg Erichthonius had been opened.

In a fit of rage and bitter disappointment, Athena hurled the mountain to the distant valley below and returned, to eventually come to terms with her adopted son and raise Him as Her own.

And Erichthonius became a well-liked and respected sovereign King ~ just like Midas, everything he touched, turned to gold.  This Serpent King ruled by example, and taught the people many crafts and secrets, such as the art of horses, the use of chariots, how to till the soil using ploughs and how to smelt silver , iron and other minerals. Thus , Erichthonius, the Serpent Naga King of Athens, was a highly beneficient King and Light-Bringer to the people.

Long before the nonsensical fairy tale of Medusa having been decapitated by Perseus ever came about in the febrile minds of patriarchal scribes; Erichthonius was the Symbolic Serpent which was behind, and formed part of, Athena’s shield.

In the original myths, Zeus favoured and admired Erichthonius for His skill with horses and charioteering, so much that upon the death of the King, He was immortalized by becoming the constellation of Auriga, the Charioteer.

Wow!  What an amazing tale!  Thank you so much for sharing Jinny :)

Thanks, Pepper Potts :)

The Serpent emblem on the shield of Athena is to symbolise the Life Force of the Kundalini :)

And I would hazard a guess, "Don't tread on me" lol
