Greeters! can you have too many? I don't think so... let's find out! :)
This is probably the most important activity there is on the site is making people feel welcome, and like they have options in terms of people to talk to if they're a little lost on something, have a question, etc.
If you would like to participate in greeting people to the Temple, please do. You don't even need to formally ask to be a greeter, just be one, this is your Temple too!
Greet as many or as few new people as you like. Just check out the Members tab, it lists members by the most recent, so new members are easy to find to welcome.
Quality is more important than quantity. I would rather you leave a few meaningful and personal greetings, than hit everyone up with a form. We have a few greeters now, and myself, who kind of cover the more form style of formal greeting. Ideally, a personal touch is better. Read the profile, find a connection to comment on. If there is a connection that is, of course be genuine, if there's nothing you find interesting don't give someone a false compliment, but take an extra minute to read and give your welcome a personal touch. For example... I see your a gemini too! Welcome. :)
What matters to me is the energy behind the greeting, be genuine. Greet people as yourself, and in a way that you like, and greet the people you feel like greeting. Your greeting can be just text, just image, both, video, whatever you would like to greet people with!
If you would like to friend them... do! worst that will happen is they won't accept... which is rare.
Maybe you remember when you joined the Temple how nice it felt to have people greet you.... :) Let's spread the love, that's what this place is all about.

It's easy to second guess yourself, for sure, I do it all the time. I often think I'm coming across cheesy, or crazy, or flowery, or fakey, or... all kinds of self-judgements tumble through my head at times when I post simple comments. Especially if they're that first initial contact with someone... that, first impression, as you say.
I've found that most people enjoy being welcomed, a lot, breaking the ice and making those first connections is hard for most people online, the vast majority. So as unsure as you may be feeling, that new person coming on the site is even -more- unsure. Your welcome to them, along with others, is that first wave of reassurance as they enter the site, that they've entered friendly territory and they'll be able to make some kind of connection here.
You may not share a greeting that appeals to everyone, what's important is just that it's genuine. Find your own welcome groove. Write a welcome poem, or search for someone elses to share. Find a welcome quote. Search for an image you like. Or just say "Hi! Welcome. I'm Nibble. :)"
I think if everyone sends some elaborate welcome to new members they're going to start to think they have to become a master artist and linguist in order to fit in. Sometimes simple is best.
Greeting and being helpful to new members in chat is certainly just as an important way to make people feel welcome too! and thank you so much for that. :)
Try a few greetings on for size though, and see if you like it. I'm hooked myself. :) I greet wherever I go...
