THE ALTAR BOY

A note about this poem from the poet...

This concerns a winter's morning when I walked to church to serve as an altar boy at the 5:30 A.M. Mass.  Way back then the neighborhood I lived in was mostly Catholic and the church I went to was open 24/7 for what was called Perpetual Devotion which meant there was ALWAYS someone in the church praying, cleaning or setting up for the next Mass. That morning there was a group of old women praying and getting the church ready for the first Mass of the day. They did this in total silence and with their heads covered as was the tradition. There was an extremely strong Spiritual presence that I felt that morning emanating from these old widows in their babooshkas going about their devotion and work in reverent silence . I have come to realize this was the real Spiritual powerhouse of the Catholic Church, not the priestly heirarchy with their dogma and political agendas. I dedicate this memory to them.

An afterthought... 

My Spiritual journey is FAR from done and I still fight "demons" that blind, stubborn Pride allowed into my soul throughout the years. Theology without Love in action is a quick road to hardness of heart and  Pharisaical hypocrisy. Forgetting ourselves is a good step in bringing Peace and Sanity into our lives and into the world.
