Thank you for commenting on one of my fav creatures! This 6-inch long insect is a very sweet and gentle, and for those able to capture one and duplicate its environment and food find this wonderful creature as a lovely pet. I would LOVE to have one, but it is quite illegal to 'keep' one because it is endangered, and rare (thought to be extinct until one was found in 2001). Tree lobsters, also called Lord Howe Island stick insects (Dryococelus australis), are a species endemic to the remote Lord Howe Island Group, an irregularly shaped volcanic remnant in the Tasman Sea between Australia and New Zealand. They have been able to 'hatch' them in the San Diego Zoo from a breeding pair from the Melbourne Zoo Conservation Center in around 2015-2016, the first successful hatching in the U.S. after many failures.
