The lessons I have learned from Bruce Lee are ~ to be as water- to flow into, through and around situations, like water. There's nothing as soft and yielding as water, yet it dissolves even the hardest and most inflexible substance, or obstacle, rather, to spiritual advancement.

Most people see Kung Fu as a fighting discipline which people take up to harm others with.
Yet nothing can be further from the truth. Tai Chi, which is the foundation of Kung Fu, is the way of learning to move as water, to BE the water, as Bruce Lee would say.
Water is the most valuable item on the planet, as without it, we would die within a week or so. Metaphysically speaking, water is the source of all life. The ancients all believed that life originated in the waters, which implied both celestial waters of outer space and the oceans and fresh water, which is the lifeblood of the Earth.

Martial arts with weaponry began with peasant farmers who adapted their tools as weapons when at a stage in our history, the warrior clans gained ascendancy and replaced the traditional matriarchal cultures of our past and they had to defend themselves.

Prior to this time when warfare began, there was no need for weapons at all and the nunchuk was merely a weed slasher.

The main lesson though was to discover more about the Yin and Yang symbolism associated with the martial arts, which as Marcie says, are every male( and some female) child's favorite at some stage or other due to their enormous popularity as a media genre.

The philosophy of Old is all about the balance between male and female energies, both of which need to interact to create life. Yin is not evil, nor is Yang, good. These forces are of the natural world and precede any such subjective meanings or attachments.

Males should embrace their Yin aspects and females their Yang, in my humble opinion, to regain the essential balance. Of course this has no bearing on anyone's sexual orientation or chosen lifestyle, it is an internal process which as such, is uniquely individual.

The Yin of women is enduring and self-sustaining, whereas the Yang is reliant on Yin to survive. Yang needs Yin to replenish and maintain itself, thus ancient societies were matriarchal in nature, as a social acknowledgement of female supremacy in this regard. Failure to accept this basic fact of life, led to the gender wars.
Acceptance of the way Nature works, totally bypasses the need for any gender warring or confusion, because both female and male recognize each other's shortcomings and strengths, and instead of fighting for dominance, just combine to operate together and go with the flow, like water.

All of our ancestral symbology demonstrates that it was natural duality, not preconceived notions of the good versus evil dichotomy, that the ancients embraced.

And aside from those lessons, Bruce Lee taught me that violence, however well- intentioned, always rebounds on itself. The use of violence to solve anything is like poison to spiritually aware people. Yet there are times when one has no option but to protect oneself and their loved ones from violent people who have lost touch with themselves and use violence to take what is not theirs from the innocent.

Aside from the useful practical applications of the arts and their amazing effects on the body the philosophy of the Tao as a way of life harmonizes with a Pagan path. The Tao Te Ching is a collection of verse authored by Laozi, an ancient master whose works not only define the Tao in human terms so that we can learn to know nothing, and replace all of it with self-knowledge; but are also a paean to the Mother Goddess from whose primeval waters we emerged, in the beginning, from the Void - like a Phoenix.
