Intent: To protect the life and well-being of a pet or domestic animal.
Ingredients:
- 2 pt Red Clover Blossoms & Leaves
- 1 pt White Oak Bark
- 1 pt Hyssop
- 1 pt Sweet Basil
- For Cats - 1 pt Catnip
- For Dogs - 1 pt Fennel
- For Horses - 1 pt Oatstraw
- For Small Mammals - 1 pt Parsley
- For Reptiles - 1 pt Nettle
- For Fish or Amphibians - 1 pt Irish Moss
Materials:
- Mortar & Pestle (or spice grinder)
- Funnel
- Mesh Strainer
- Collection Dish
- Container
Note: Powdered versions of most herbs are available online. Also, if you can get your hands on a good spice grinder, you can make your own powder from dried herb products.
Grind each ingredient separately to produce fine powder. Sieve the material through the mesh strainer into the collection dish; this removes the larger unground pieces and gives you cleaner powdered herb. (Pro-Tip: Putting a funnel under the mesh strainer reduces lost material and makes collection much easier.)
Combine the component powders in the collection dish, mix well, and bottle immediately.
Bind a few pinches of the powder into a sachet or packet with an image of the animal which is to be protected. If shed fur, claws, scales, etc. are available, include these as well.
Please note that the use of this powder does not guarantee perfect health, complete prevention of accidents, or abnormally long life. It can only help to protect and succor the animal for the natural span of its’ life. Be sure to employ good methods of mundane care and regular checkups to ensure good health.
DO NOT FEED THIS POWDER TO ANY ANIMAL.
*This is NOT an all-powerful animal protection shield. I’m sure everyone has enough common sense not to, but DO NOT think that this is gonna do the trick and you can leave your pets unattended anywhere where bad stuff can happen to them.
What You Need:
- Piece of paper and pen and/or picture of your pet(s)
- Fireproof bowl
- Water (I used sea water)
- Dried basil
- Dried rosemary
- Dried lavender
- Salt. If all you’ve got is table salt, that’s perfect. That’s what I use.
- Olive oil or protection oil or any oil
- Or whatever herbs and stuff you connect to protection
- Whatever tea light candle you’ve got lying around (I used brown)
- Another candle of whatever color, you’re gonna gonna need it for like 5 seconds
Optional:
- Sand
- Hair/feather/shed skin/whatever covers your pet *but don’t pluck shit if it doesn’t shed or anything because that ain’t cool*
- Dragon’s Blood incense/other incense you find works great for protection
What you’re gonna do:
- Charge/cast a circle/do whatever you do (or don’t do) before a spell.
- Light your incense if you’re gonna use it.
- Before anything else, turn your tea light upside down and light the other candle you’ve got. Drop some wax on the metal thing at the bottom to seal and cover it. You’re gonna be putting the tea light in the bowl for it to float in the water. The candle will collapse half lit if you don’t. If you don’t want to do that, you can do all the steps and just flick the mixed water on a candle and let the candle burn down by itself on a fireproof plate or holder.
- Write the name of your pet on a piece of paper and place it along with the picture of your pet under the bowl.
- If you have sand, put a layer of sand at the bottom of the bowl.
- Add the hair/feather/your pet thing to the bowl.
- Add your water to the bowl.
- Pour in the salt and the herbs. Mix it gently so you don’t totally disturb the sand but don’t worry if you do, it’s going to settle. Keep in mind the intent of protecting your pet.
- Anoint your candle with the oil with the intention of protection.
- Drop the candle into the bowl gently so it floats (or flick the water on the candle). Light it.
- Turn the lights off and watch the candle burn, the entire time thinking about your pet(s) and wanting them to be protected and safe. You can pick up the bowl and pour your energy into it, charging it with the love you have for your pet. You can close your eyes and visualize your pets surrounded by your protective energy.
- Let the candle burn down, or blow/snuff it out and light it up again whenever you want to give them a little bit more protection.
Pet Protection Spell
While it is important to work carefully with your totem animals, it is also important to remember your pets. This spell will help protect your animal friends on the physical plane.
For EACH animal you will need:
1 six-inch square piece of black felt
fabric paints
a clipping of hair or stray feathers from your pet
2 teaspoons dried cedar
1 bay leaf
2 teaspoons catnip (even if you have a dog)
1 teaspoon comfrey
¼ teaspoon dried garlic
1 teaspoon heather
Protection or Guardian oil (shown below)
Cotton
Needle and thread
On what will be the outside of the charm bag paint your pet’s name and these runes: Algiz, Koad; the forest rune; the pentacle and the Goddess rune. Let dry. Fold the felt in half (painted side in) and sew two sides of it, leaving one open. Reverse the bag so the painted side is facing out. Raise energy on the herbs then powder and pour into the pouch. Add the clipping of pet hair, then stuff the rest with cotton to which you have added a few drops of the oil. Finish sewing the pouch.
Cast a circle, invoke the elements and the Lord and Lady.
Say:
O gracious Lord and Lady,
Protector of all creatures who walk upon this earth.
Guard my (pet’s species and name) against harm and illness.
Watch over him/her with every step he/she takes.
Help me protect him/her and strengthen the connection of love between us.
Let this charm be blessed, to hold the energy of protection.
Blessed be.
Keep the charm bags in a safe place, perhaps on your altar, where the animal can’t get to it. Renew this charm every six months.
Remember: the best protection for your animals is to keep them inside, to keep their vaccinations current, and to give them plenty of love, food, and clean water.
