Illustrated HORSE HAIKUS

Though I've only ridden a horse once in my life the feeling of freedom and connectedness to WHAT IS is one I have never forgotten. I found some Celtic letter "H" es that were perfect for horses. The big eye symbolizes an intelligence connected to pure Spirit though I don't have a proper noun or definition for this Spirit. Horses just remind me of it.  marK

Fantasy, it is often said, is a child's mental playground and one can romp around with satyrs and castles and Jesus with his miracles without the constraints of logic, an empty stomach and an empty pocket. Specially when one is without playmates, without friends, without toys.

It is the fire in the belly which fuels the starving artist, the inventor with his dream, and any one who believes that this world is not the only one, that there are others, many others which one can freely create, where nothing is impossible, and all that one needs is one's mind.

Imagination. Dream. Vision. Fantasy. They're all the same. All acts of transcendence, going beyond what is, what is present, for something that is yet in "another world" but so vivid, so meaningful, so desirable.

It's a double edged sword--for me. It can be, for some people, a very strong impetus to look for the "secret and forbidden doorway" which would open up this world, these multiple worlds. That doorway is Death.

Listening to this old ABBA standard, with its seemingly cheerful lyrics and imagery, and thinking of the children of Iraq, Gaza, Afghanistan and many others in the Third World singing it in chorus, I cannot help but choke.

Death really is the only way out but I think we'd both agree we are still responsible to use our life to improve our current "condition". I try to balance out my fantasy life (escape from pain and sorrow) with corporeal acts of mercy (forgetting your own pain to help others deal with theirs). Actually that is a Heaven of sorts in that you DO tend to forget yourself ( and your pain) in the process of helping others. I think that is what John Lennon might have meant with " Imagine there's no Heaven."  In a kinder, more sane environment I believe children experience these Heaven feelings more than anyone and conversely they experience the Hell feelingsw  more intensely. I hear what you're saying about the sad irony in those cheerful children's choruses. I have no fixed idea of Heaven except for the absence of suffering.

Thanks Jose, we really do need to consider these things (the Heaven fantasies) in a way that impels us to fix the actual state of suffering much of the world is in. Be well friend.  marK
