The Adult Baby Lifestyle Is More Complex Than You'd Think + Things You Maybe Didn't Want To Know

When you think about the phrase "adult baby," what flashes through your head? Facts about adult babies describe a misunderstood community. What does it mean to be an adult baby? What are they into, aside from the obvious? And is there a reason why fetishes like this crop up?

The things you didn't know about adult babies could fit in a ten-gallon diaper. The members of this world live a normal life outside of acting like babies, and the things that attract them to being infantilized are likely totally different than what you might expect. At the end of the day, adult babies are just people - albeit people with a unique perspective on the world.

  • There Are Lots Of Ways Of Being An Adult Baby

The ABDL (Adult Baby Diaper Lover) community is a wide and varied group of people who enjoy a plethora of activities related to diapers, and being treated as a child. Some of them role play as babies, while other members of the community are simply comforted by clothing and items related to infancy.

The one thing adult babies are not interested in is sexual contact with children or babies - a common misconception of the fetish.

  • Adult Baby May Not Be The Appropriate Term

Not everyone who roleplays as a baby wants to be called an "adult baby." In some cases, the term carries a negative connotation. Many members of the ABDL scene prefer to be referred to as a "little," the submissive partner of an ABDL relationship.

  • There's No Known Trigger For The Fetish

What causes someone to become an adult baby? No one knows for sure. Some people believe that imprinting causes infantilism; a mother putting diapers on a child creates associations between humiliation and sexuality. Another theory is that being an adult baby is an identity disorder that's based on the self rather than a partner.

  • Adult Babies Have Their Own Store

Where do you to find diapers made for adult babies? You can shop online, but if you live near Chicago, IL, you can go to Tykables, the country's only physical store for adult babies and diaper lovers. John-Michael Williams, the store's owner, says that Tykables caters to more than just adult babies:

We also have a lot of people who are incontinent or require, physically, to wear diapers, and who prefer our style and branding. And then the third category includes people on the autistic spectrum. They prefer our products over some of the medical products because we don’t focus on the medical aspect - we actually help them remove some of that stigma that’s associated with these products.

  • Physical Gratification Is Often Involved

Like any fetish, being an adult baby involves gratification. John-Michael Williams, owner of Tykables, broke down what littles enjoy about the ABDL scene for the Huffington Post:

They are aroused... either through role play or from the product itself - the sound, texture or feeling. Or, for some people, there’s a humiliation aspect. It could be any one of those things, or something else I haven’t mentioned. It’s a really individual thing. It has nothing to do with actual children. The gratification comes from the objects or the role play and the persons themselves 'being' the child.

  • Some People Feel More Protected As A Baby

Jess, an adult baby living in Lakeland, FL, spoke to the New York Post about her life role playing with her boyfriend as a baby and daddy. According to her, it helps her get over her childhood as a survivor of sexual abuse:

For us, it is more about enjoying the dominant/submissive dynamic in our everyday lives. I enjoy the feeling of David being a protector and a person that I can depend on to look after me and he likes feeling needed.

  • They Party Hard

A writer for Vice went to Adult Baby Club, a monthly party hosted in a basement behind London's King's Cross station. It's advertised as a "safe place for ABs, DLs, their daddies, mummies, and friends to play." Adult Baby Club has been going on for years, inviting ABDLs in to play catch, chase each other around in rompers, and dance. There's also a bar that serves breast milk.

  • There's A Lot Of Crossover With Other Scenes

The ABDL scene crosses over with a lot of different scenes. One of the biggest overlaps is the world of puppy play, likely because it involves crawling around on all fours and acting like a young animal. A Vice article details a party for adult babies, at which attendees note their shared interests in the furry scene and pet play.

  • Some Adult Babies Are Into Humiliation

Many ABDLs are just into relaxing in their diapers, but some littles prefer humiliation. A little named Roy described his fetish to Vice:

There's no bigger turn-on than sh*tting yourself in public. I love putting on a nappy, going down the supermarket, and sh*tting myself in front of everyone... It's the humiliation I like. I reckon most people are into it, if they're honest. Sh*tting themselves.

  • Many Littles Want A Feeling Of Safety

MTV's True Life: I’m an Adult Baby chronicles multiple adult babies, including Robert, a 22-year-old man who was still grieving the passing of his father. His biggest comfort as an adult baby was a room full of stuffed animals that simply made him feel comfortable. Robert described it as " something that makes me feel safe ... where nobody or nothing can really hurt me, I guess you could say."

  • There Are Baby Sitters For Adult Babies

Let's say you're an adult baby, and you need someone to watch you for the evening. Who do you call? It can be tedious to find a baby sitter for an adult, and if the sitter isn't adept at taking care of littles, then you might end up in a whole heap of trouble. Luckily, there's a directory of sitters for adult babies, and even if you can't find an in-person baby sitter, there are "phone mommies" who charge per minute.

  • Adult Babies Have Their Own Fetish Dungeons

ABDLs have their own dungeons, or rather "nurseries," which are adult-only. In Liverpool, Mummy Maxine and her husband Derek Ventham, an adult baby, run a nursery where you can visit for £75 an hour. For an extra £25, you can get a "messy change."

Mummy Maxine claims that a third of her clients are men under 25 years old, and that there's no sexual activity allowed. She explained the nursery to The Mirror:

We get people from all walks of life. We get same-sex couples, male and female couples. I even have one client whose personal assistant makes the /ointments for him, he’s very successful and has a lot of people work under him - so it helps him relax.

Adult baby syndrome, or adult babies, are people who dress up as babies and often use diapers. It's all fun and games until someone needs a diaper change...

I stumbled upon the baby section of a department store the other day, and I have to admit that sometimes I wish I could go back to those days when I did nothing but sleep and eat all day – well, I don’t remember that time, but I think that’s how it went. Just browsing around the aisles made me squeal inside with the irresistible cuteness of all the baby products, like the cartoon onesies, jumpers, and the tiny pacifiers that help babies relax. Nonetheless, I have no desire to walk around wearing a diaper again, which is why I was so surprised to come across an adult-sized diaper on display. “What kind of baby would wear these?,” I asked myself out loud, and the sales associate who happened to walk by said “adult babies.”

Living as an adult baby is a lifestyle that takes on many forms (and sometimes fetishes), depending on the person who lives it. The people who enjoy this way of life are called many names, but one name describes them the best: Adult Baby Diaper Lovers (ABDL). Not all adult babies behave like babies, but many love doing so. They buy customized "baby" furniture that is appropriate to their size, drink from a bottle, and enjoy the softness and comfort of diapers. Many others think of this age regression as a sexual act that can turn into a role-playing activity with their partner. These activities are usually safe, and they shouldn’t be stigmatized because they’re just a lifestyle decision, like many others. Wouldn’t you like to go back to that time where your only problems were waiting until someone changed your diaper?

This lifestyle definitely comes with a big price tag, and not just because of the customized furniture and clothing that'll make you appreciate the affordability of baby-sized products, but also the fact that you’ll require a babysitter. That’s right, babies can’t take care of themselves, and adult babies often require someone to look after them, someone who can feed them, play with them, and even change their diapers when any accidents occur. But living as an adult can be therapeutic too, or at least that's what Tori Hart, an 18-year-old Adult Baby Diaper Lover told SWNS. Hart shares her life as a grown baby through her Instagram account, and she mentioned that regressing to a baby stage again helped her overcome a dark chapter of her infancy where she was sexually abused. In fact, Hart says that this way of life has helped her reclaim her childhood and even battle mental health problems like depression, anxiety, and eating disorders.

Quitting your job and redecorating your room with pastel colors and gigantic baby furniture sounds like an impossible thing to do, but it’s actually doable. Proof of this is 23-year-old Youtuber Jess, also known as Binkie Princess, an adult baby who has fulfilled her fantasy of living as a baby with everything that comes with it, and she shares it all on her channel. She crawls, plays with colorful toys, and wears a onesie and diaper every day. She shows viewers around her room (nursery) and shows off her new acquisitions, like her gigantic white crib. Although her boyfriend is not into her way of life, he seems to support her and accept her choices. Here’s a video of her explaining her lifestyle.

Both Hart and Jess say they're not interested in the sexual role-playing that is sometimes associated with adult babies. Their lifestyle is glamorized through their social media accounts, and they seem to be getting lots of support from many followers. They are part of a growing community that doesn't feel ashamed about sharing their photographs online. They are obviously aware of their age and know the difference between being an adult and being a baby. Yet, they choose to experience this way of life because it makes them feel happy and satisfied. The question is, are they going to do it forever?
