Lion’s mane or Monkey’s Head – Hericium Erinaceus
“The generic name Hericium literally means “pertaining to hedgehog”, and Erinaceus mirrors that meaning (Erinaceus is also a genus of hedgehog.) As these mushrooms have spines or teeth (as opposed to gills), they appear rather hedgehog like. https://fungi.com/blogs/articles/decoding-latin-binomials?_ke=eyJrb...“
This mushroom has anti-cancer, immune enhancing, and nerve regenerating properties.
There are four different kinds of Lions Mane - Hericium Erinaceus, H. americanum,
H. coralloides, or H. abieties. “The Hedgehog-Hedgehog Mushroom”
Studies have found that lion’s mane mushrooms contain two special compounds that can stimulate the growth of brain cells: hericenones and erinacines
Additionally, animal studies have found that lion’s mane may help protect against Alzheimer’s disease.
A study in older adults with mild cognitive impairment found that consuming 3 grams of powdered lion’s mane mushroom daily for four months significantly improved mental functioning, but these benefits disappeared when supplementation stopped.
The ability of Lion’s Mane mushroom to promote nerve growth and protect the brain from Alzheimer’s-related damage may explain some of its beneficial effects on brain health.
Two-month oral supplementation with H. Erinaceus reversed the age-decline of recognition memory

Hericium Erinaceus or commonly known as Lions Mane has attracted great attention owing to its anti-tumor and immunomodulatory effect (Wang et al. 2004). Kim et al. (2011) investigated the anti-tumor effects of the extracts of these mushrooms in Balb/c mice transplanted with CT-26 colon cancer cells. The β-glucan rich hot-water obtained by boiling and microwaving, when injected daily for 2 weeks, significantly reduced tumor weights by 38 and 41%, respectively.
Tumor regressions were associated with an increase in natural killer cells and tumor necrosis factors. Reduced COX-2 and 5-LOX expression further triggered the inhibition of neo-angiogenesis inside the tumors. It was concluded that induction of NK activity, activation of macrophages, and inhibition of angiogenesis all contribute to the mechanism of reduction of tumor size.
In a nutshell, Lion’s Mane is known for its effects on the central nervous system. Chinese medicine practitioners have used lion’s mane medicinally for centuries to:
It is also thought to be helpful with insomnia, weakness, and low strength or energy… and research is still uncovering other benefits. https://wellnessmama.com/395498/lions-mane/
