"As J.V Luce writes in "The End of Atlantis", some of the elements of Plato's Atlantis are a 'startlingly accurate sketch of the Minoan Empire in the sixteenth century BCE.' Or as the Greek archaeologist Nicholas Platon writes, 'the legend handed down by Plato of the submerged Atlantis may be a reference to the history of Minoan Crete and it's sudden destruction.'
For according to Plato, Atlantis is destroyed by 'violent earthquakes and floods" just as the Minoan civilization is now believed by scholars to have been given the death blow that made possible the Achaean takeover of both Crete and the Minoan settlements in Greece'
