15 - The Devil (from the Inner Child Tarot Deck)

Does anyone know the story of "Little Red Riding Hood (or Red Cap)? It's about a little girl who, dressed in a red cape and hood, is traveling along through the forest to visit her grandmother, who is ill and needs food and medicine. "Little Red" at some point meets a very crafty wolf who wishes to eat her, but is afraid to do so out in the open. After speaking to Red the wolf finds out she is going to visit an old sickly woman (grandma). With this knowledge the wolf keeps Red distracted with some odd chores like picking flowers for her grandma so that he can slip away and go eat the old woman, dress in her clothes, and then pretend to BE Red's grandma from under the sheets of the bed. 

The wolf's plan works and then he lies in wait for Red to arrive. When she does, Red questions her "grandma" on her strange appearance (the wolf's hands, eyes, teeth) & even her voice...but the wolf tricks her into still believing him...until she gets close enough...AND SWALLOWS HER WHOLE (I am quoting off the original Brother's Grimm version...not the nice fluffy Disney-like versions) !!

What's this all have to do with our photo here?

 

One word: OPPRESSION ! 

Little Red Riding Hood/Cap let the nasty wolf trick her into believing he was something he wasn't...and more importantly....that she was "his" granddaughter. Just as the Devil card in tarot suggests that we are in bondage to our own doings sometimes...that the chains exist...because we believe them to exist. Red could tell something was quite wrong with her grandma's appearance, but Red let herself BELIEVE the wolf to be as he said....in other words...Red let someone else tell her what to see...what to hear...and in the forest....what to do.

We...like the lady here with the butterfly on her face...sometimes cannot see our own beauty...no matter how obvious. We let others tell us what to believe, what to wear, how to act, what to say, and what's worst of all...we let others tell us WHO WE ARE...

...IN THEIR MIRROR !
