Empaths are highly sensitive, finely tuned instruments when it comes to emotions. They feel everything, sometimes to an extreme, and are less apt to intellectualize feelings. Intuition is the filter through which they experience the world. Empaths are naturally giving, spiritually attuned, and good listeners. If you want heart, empaths have got it. Through thick and thin, they’re there for you, world-class nurturers.

What kind of Empath are you?

The Empath…dealing with the thoughts of others

Uneasy with the thoughts of many,
buzzing direction-less sprays of negativity,
and I reel from their affront,
my balance and quiet of mind
confront my open heart.

Twisted this malice given,
by those in chaos, the lives they’re living,
and thoughts like bullets fly through air,
and I duck and weave trying not to care,
but its too late.

I wear their refuse like clad rags,
weighted, dark and burdensome,
as those thoughts so destructive begin to numb me down,
and I feel sick, frantic to escape the onslaught,
survive their hard edges.

I need my quiet, my solitary time,
to digest what I did not consider mine,
and as I restore my balance I try not to let myself
absorb so much of others,
to more validate my pariah life.

It is sad to hold so much, to feel what is not meant,
but life hands out what gifts we take
and this is my burden to accept,
as feeling and understanding is a gift,
although often it feels anything but.

An empathic narcissist starts out, most of the time, as a high-empathy-index individual who devolves into an empathic narcissist for any of several causes - most commonly from being surrounded by insensitive, selfish people who project THEIR motives and actions onto the empathic in question - in some cases without their conscious realization of what they're done. Without proper preparation in advance, the empathic often becomes a true victim of a form of "empathic rape", so to speak. As a defense, the empathic begins to develop a self-centered view aimed at preventing further damage of that sort. I know, it happened to me. It's a difficult cycle to break once it starts. I
