WHAT IS EARL GREY TEA

If you are an avid Earl Grey tea drinker then you probably already know that it is a black tea infused with bergamot essential oil. Yep. That’s right. Although, originally it very well could have been made with the actual citrus peels of the bergamot fruit.

So as long as you have access to some very high quality essential oils (I personally recommend using organic essential oils if you plan on using them in cooking) and some loose leaf black tea you are ready to make this blend! I’ve also added in some lovely organic bachelor button petals as they are a bit iconic with Earl Grey tea. However, if you don’t have those, you can leave them out.

HOW TO MAKE EARL GREY TEA

Feel free to double this recipe if you wish to make a larger batch.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1/2 cup loose leaf black tea (my favorite is organic Fair Trade assam)

  • 5-7 drops of organic bergamot essential oil

  • 2 tablespoons organic bachelor button petals (dried)

DIRECTIONS

Start by carefully dropping the essential oils into a small mason jar. Swirl the essential oils around to coat the jar. Add the black tea to the jar, put the cap on and shake it all up to evenly coat the tea. Open the lid, add in the flower petals and shake again! Store in the glass jar away from direct sunlight. Use like you would any loose leaf black tea.

OTHER TIDBITS

I highly recommend starting with the smaller amount of essential oils and seeing if it’s strong enough for you. Bergamot is a very strong oil so it’s easy to overdo it! You can always add another drop or two if you need to later. Although, if you find the tea too strong you can always add a little more black tea. ;)

Rosalee recommends letting the tea sit for a couple days to “cure” and I’ve found this to be great advice—although I have been known to use it right away because I was having a craving! Either way totally works.

Do bear in mind that essential oils are highly volatile which means over time the oil will evaporate and degrade so the flavor will weaken. Basically that means don’t let this sit around for years—although it’s so tasty I don’t know how that would be possible!

If you REALLY want to kick this up a notch you should try making this with my vanilla infused black tea. Oh my gosh it’s so good.

HOW TO BREW EARL GREY TEA

Brew this like you would any loose leaf tea:

  • 1 teaspoon tea

  • 8 ounces just boiled water

Place the tea inside a metal tea strainer, pour the water over the tea and allow it to steep for 3-5 minutes. Strain, add milk and sweetener if desired. My favorite is with a splash of milk and a bit of honey.

And then when you’re really feeling fancy make yourself a lavender london fog.

WHERE TO PURCHASE THE INGREDIENTS

If you are unable to grow your own herbs, or find ingredients locally, then here are some of my favorite places to buy bulk ingredients. Some of these may be affiliate links which allows me to make a nickel or two without costing you a single penny more. This allows me to keep posting great content for you. Thank you for your support!

Starwest Botanicals

The Bulk Herb Store

Personally I’m a fan of Garden Essence Essential oils. They are high quality and most of them are organic. You can find them here. I do not receive any compensation for recommending them, I just love the oils!

INGESTING ESSENTIAL OILS

If you’ve read my blog for any amount of time you will know that I do not recommend ingesting essential oils for any purpose other than in culinary doses. Since this recipe is in small amounts and in food preparation, it is considered a culinary dose. If you are uncomfortable ingesting oils in any shape or form then I recommend you do not drink Earl Grey tea in general since most of what is on the market is made by using the essential oil.

One of my favorites...

I never knew there was essential oil in it!!  I'm not even sure if I have tried Earl Grey!  Did you know there is a Lady Grey??

Not on the Earl grays that I have drank, I doubt they had any essential oil, and no, I have not heard of Lady Gray, but I can imagine if I like it just the way I had it, how much more would I like it with the essential oil...

Thanks.
