A package bomber suspected of being responsible for six recent attacks in San Antonio, Texas, has blown himself up. The 24-year-old white male, Mark Anthony Conditt, purposefully triggered a bomb in his car as S.W.A.T. members closed in on him. FBI and S.W.A.T. team members managed to track Conditt down after in-depth investigative measures at prior explosion locations and events occurring in recent weeks.
• In total, the suspected bomber initiated multiple attacks over the past few weeks throughout Austin. Six are known of, but it is unclear whether the bomber may have some still in transit or in waiting.
The first attack authorities believe is connected to the man happened on March 2, 2018, in East Austin. That package bomb killed local resident Anthony House.
• On March 12, a second bomb in East Austin killed 17-year-old Draylen Mason. The same bomb also caused serious injuries for an elderly women who was at the scene.
• The third bomb wasn’t in a package; instead, it was attached to a high-tech tripwire in Southwest Austin. It exploded after two cyclists accidentally encountered it while out on a ride. Both cyclists suffered non-critical injuries.
• Another incident involved a package that blew up while traveling along a conveyor belt at FedEx. It caused minor injuries to mail workers in the room, but no one was seriously injured.
• During the same time frame, authorities identified a suspicious package at the airport’s FedEx location. Fortunately, it was identified and disarmed before it could go off and harm anyone in the area.
• It is important to note that investigators don’t yet know whether or not all of these incidents are related to each other or connected in many ways. Authorities have been careful to remind the public that the Schertz bombing may or may not be connected to the FedEx bombings.
• The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives tweeted during the event, initially reporting that the “”ATF is with @Austin_Police and @FBISanAntonio on I-35 at the scene of the individual suspected in the #packagebombmurders.” Austin police followed up by confirming they were dealing with an officer-involved shooting.
• It isn’t yet known whether Conditt worked alone or what his motive may have been. Rumors that the crimes were racially motivated are spurring on debate across Texas, but are largely unsubstantiated. At least two of the victims were caucasian.
• President Trump cheered the culmination of the investigation with a tweet. “”AUSTIN BOMBING SUSPECT IS DEAD. Great job by law enforcement and all concerned!”
