Thanks amigo. It took a while to find the right version of Eleanor Rigby for this but it was worth it. I was about 12 when Ricky died and though I was not a friend of his (he had no friends as far as I know) his death set wheels in motion in my head that had never moved before.

A lot of pain is embedded in that poem - and till reading the responses already here,  I'd thought it was more metaphorical than literal.  I hope, wherever his soul may be, that Ricky has found a balm for the healing of his spirit.

This is a rough world on the soul and Ricky, like so many, saw numbing his pain as the only way of getting through. Nothing will kill you quicker ( or turn you into a suicide bomber ) than hopelessness. Just not enough love to go around for everyone and not everyone has the Spiritual grounding to see beyond the "vale of tears" we find ourselves in. Thanks for checking this out Todd.  marK
Thanks for your thoughts on this maryrose. I've had the saME THOUGHTS on remembering going from one state of being to another and though I can't remember being one week old I am nevertheless the same soul 56 years and many changes later. I think living with mysteries is  a part of our Spirit's growth in that we learn to focus on the NOW. Not sure whether Ricky's death was intentional or not but I believe his soul lives on and hopefully in a happier existence. Be well my friend.  marK
Loneliness hurts

I walk amid the crowds smiling and acknowledging all
Within, my loneliness yet grows as a tumor on my soul
Trying to find a kinship of my mind amongst the crowd
Working hard to seem like all who would be proud

Smoking and drinking give some relief to my mind
waking in the morn only doubles the weight of loneliness
This weight is now too heavy a burden on my mind
they say the other side will have no pain of loneliness
Thanks for the reply H. I think we live in a culture that isolates us from each other to the point we are more attached to our machines than other humans. For some it is worse than for others just due to our personalities and emotional makeup but no matter what the cause loneliness can be poison to the soul. I keep on in the hope that what lies beyond is kinder to us than this world is, and I keep hanging on.  MarL
