Chalices and Incense

 

chalices and incense
pentacles and charms

light the candle
and toss the runes

Some think that ritual
that fair exotic spice
is the making of magic
and is bound in sound advice

But all these things are tools
not the place where magic is found
magic is creation
nothing hidden or profound

The painter, not brush, paint and canvas
is what makes a master work

When the pentacle is inscribed
and the last candle's lit
the runes are cast
and the work is wrought

It doesn't live on canvas
or on paper from a pen
It's not an epic poem
It's not a what, or even a when

It's the act of creation
in spirit
pure and raw
and the trappings of ritual
are less than a handful of straw

to make the magic work
takes nothing, just pure view
just the essence of knowing
staying centered
and being true

City Goddess

I saw your divinity in the painted eyes
of a stoned street waif

I saw your fertility in China town’s alley
where a ten dollar hooker seven months pregnant
squatted to void her bladder

I saw your generosity in the hands of the white-haired lady
who sits on the park bench talking to herself
with bags of birdseed and cat food, peanuts and scraps.

Most people don’t see you at all
they turn their eyes away
They look for answers in scriptures
and daily, they pray

Other’s only find you in the woods
or in the smudged sanctity of incensed new age book stores

But you are here, and everywhere

Mother
and crone

Raven Call

Dark bird of Poe’s dreams
whom the uninitiated
associate with darkest screams

You mind me of
my love
feathered fool
with eyes so bright

never there was such a dark night
that took upon itself
the glossy black
of your tail

The first people of this land
They know the truth
that you freed us from a clam

That you stole the moon
You may mimic me
with your clever tongue
and it would be well

For I mimic you
and have stolen your name

It was shiny
like your eyes
and I too, want to soar above the trees
and beneath the skies.
