Known to the Greeks as the Erinyes (meaning “the angry ones”), the three Furies—Alecto (the Unyielding), Tisiphone (the Avenging), and Megeara (the Grudging)—were badass demonic spirits who spent most of their time living in the Underworld, where they lashed the hell out of doomed souls with awesome scourges made out of giant scorpion tails. These merciless, world-ruining hatchet-women wore wreaths of snakes in their hair, taking a page from Medusa’s Guide to Fashion, and had bat-like wings, seriously bad attitudes, and the ability to shoot blood out of their eyes whenever they wanted. According to both Virgil and Dante, they resided in an impenetrable fortress behind a river of fire that could not be crossed by man or god,
