Butterfly pea flower tea is an herbal drink made from dried butterfly pea flowers steeped in water.

  • It’s caffeine-free.
  • It comes from a plant called Clitoria ternatea that’s native to Southeast Asia.
  • The flowers are deep blue in color with a tinge of purple that colors and flavors the water.
  • The color goes from blue to purple when the pH level changes. Adding something acidic like lemon juice changes the color. It’s like magic!
  • Contain antioxidants that help to protect your body from cell damage.

I never saw a blue tea before. Does it give you blue lips?

I haven't tried the blue tea myself..but would like too.

Iced Butterfly Pea Flower Tea Latte

Why You’ll Love It

  • Come on, it’s Instagram ready.
  • It’s a unique drink like nothing you’ve had before.

Disclaimer

I don’t love the taste of this drink but EVERYONE loves the way it looks, so here we are.

Imagine going for a walk in the woods and you pick up some twigs and dry leaves. Then let’s pretend you boil that in hot water. That’s what butterfly pea flower tastes like.

Lemonade or lemons taste the best with butterfly pea flower tea. The brightness from the lemons work well to mask the muskiness from the tea.

What You’ll Need

STEP 1: Boil water.

Boil water on the stovetop or using an electric kettle with a temperature setting. If using an electric kettle, set the water to 190ºF.

The recommended water temperature is 212ºF but I steep it at 190ºF so I can cool it quicker for this iced drink.

STEP 2: Put tea bags into teapot and add hot water and steep for 5 minutes.

Let cool.

STEP 3: Combine half & half, sweetened condensed milk, and vanilla extract.

Stir to mix. Set aside.

STEP 4: Pour cooled butterfly pea flower tea into 2 cups of ice.

STEP 5: Slowly pour in half & half mixture into each cup.

The trick to getting the swirls is to use half & half and make sure the cup is filled with ice.

Milk is too liquid-y and not as thick so it just goes straight to the bottom without creating pretty swirls.

The half & half will settle to the bottom leaving a very pretty gradient then turn the drink to a Tiffany blue color.
