Meet Evil

Lavinia Fisher was anything but shy and innocent, this vicious creature "as I like to call her," was the first female mass murderer in the United States. Lavinia and her husband John Fisher did so many malicious, unspeakable acts of evil, with their gang of unlawful highwaymen. Although she lived in Charleston, South Carolina for most of her life with her husband, her true place of birth is still a mystery.

Lavinia along with her husband John, ran a hotel called the Six Mile Wayfarer House. The name of the hotel was based on the fact that the hotel was six miles north of Charleston, South Carolina. "After The acts of violence that happened in that hole, I would think a name like Hell Manor or Murder House would fit the wretched place a lot better." Nevertheless, the hotel was quite popular among the locals, "that is probably why it was so easy for the couple to commit their murders."

After a while people started getting suspicious of the couple. Although the hotel was quite popular at first, people started to notice guest would come in but not all would come out. It would soon be discovered that the couple had been killing their guest.

Lavinia's House Of Death

Lavina was alleged to have poisoned her victims by giving them a cup of tea laced with poison. She would give this to all the young men before bed. There was even an accusation that the couple had the bed rigged to dump the bodies into a pit, after their death by poison.

If it was not for John Peeples it is hard telling how many other young men would have met the same fateful death, as her other guest. John explained to the police, that he went to the hotel looking for a room and was told, "there was no rooms open but that he could have a cup of tea." John hated tea but to keep from appearing rude he dumped the tea when she was not looking, to make her think he drank it. Lavinia started asking the young man hundreds of questions, "where he was from, what was his occupation, etc.... "Peeples said it was more like an interrogation. After the countless questions she told him she had an open room. Feeling kind of suspicious that Lavinia might rob him he decided to sleep in a chair instead of the bed. He said he later awoke to the sound of crashing and noticed the bed had collapsed into a pit exposing the couples evil plan.

The Conviction and Death

Lavinia and her husband were hanged February, 1820 the couple who continuously tried to escape while incarcerated, where just as relentless in jail as they where out of jail. Lavinia continuously insisted the court could not kill a married woman. So the judge killed her husband the day before Lavinia making her a widow. It is said that before she died she asked anyone if they had a message for the devil then jumped and killed herself instead of waiting for the court to do it. It is alleged that she managed to stay alive for 15 minutes after jumping.

There are many faces of evil, Lavinia's although known to be rather beautiful was surely one of those. Lavinia lived a life full of deceit and greed these all eventually led to her death.
