“What do you do when you get too high?”
As more and more states begin instating medical marijuana programs and adult legalization, medicating responsibly is priority number one. Safe cannabis accessibility is being addressed, and it’s important to remain adamant about dosing. Before partaking, read this article and stock up on these items to ease your mind before a smoke session, especially if you are relatively new to cannabis.
Back to the question at hand: what do you do when you smoke too much weed or eat a potent edible? Answer: lemons and black pepper. Try these drinkable anecdotes* listed below when you go beyond your usual limit.
1.) Stay Hydrated: Iced Drinkable Anecdotes
Dry mouth (aka: cotton mouth) is a common side effect of THC, depending on the strain. Be sure to drink plenty of water. Temperature matters, the cooler the better. Drinking ice water alone will not stop the high, but it will keep you hydrated and dull the high. I have listed two “weed anecdote” drink recipes to utilize if you find yourself or a friend in of a remedy.
Lemon has been shown to help people sober up, and black pepper has been known to calm anxiety due to the terpene: beta-myrcene and its sedative qualities. If you have access to fresh lavender, add that into the mix! Linalool also helps relax the body.
Minty-Citrus Pepper Fizz:
If the effects of cannabis are too much, whip up this quick tonic to ease the high. The combination of black pepper and lemon help calm you and reduce the psychoactive effects of THC. Mint helps settle the stomach while refreshing the palate.
Ingredients:
(Items needed: microplane, glass, martini shaker)
If you have a martini mixer or protein shaker, place ice, lemon zest, lemon juice and pepper in the shaker. Shake well, pour over ice into glass. Top off with sparkling water or club soda. Top with lemon rind if feeling fancy. If you do not have access to a shaker, simply mix all ingredients together with a spoon and drink.
Drink over the course of 10 minutes and allow your body and mind to relax. You’re gonna be okay!
Lemon Ginger Fizz:
A version complete with ginger to help settle your stomach if feeling nauseous from the effects of THC.
Ingredients:
(Items needed: microplane, glass, martini shaker)
If you have a martini mixer or protein shaker, place ice, lemon zest, ginger zest, lemon juice and pepper in the shaker. Shake well, pour over ice into glass. Top off with sparkling water (or club soda). Top with lemon rind if feeling fancy. If you do not have access to a shaker, simply mix all ingredients together with a spoon and drink.
Drink over the course of 10 minutes, and allow your body and mind to relax. Ginger helps settle the stomach and any resulting nausea.
2.) Stay Calm: This too shall pass
If you are feeling too high, stay calm and sit down. I find putting on relaxing music or Netflix, is great way to distract yourself from dealing with paranoia when feeling overwhelmed. Find a comfortable, safe place and stay there. Most people experience these feelings after eating edibles or trying a dab for the first time. Eat something if you can, relax and indulge those munchies when possible.
3.) Go to Bed
Sometimes you have to set your pride aside and call it a night (or day). The best remedy to counter getting unstably high is sleeping it off. If you are new to sleeping while high, be prepared for some of the best sleep of your life. Unlike alcohol, you will wake up re-charged and refreshed without having to nurse a nasty hangover. Pro-tip: mix up a tonic listed above and drink before going to bed; this will ensure you won’t wake up high and dulled.
Remember to go slow, and note activation times often listed on edible Cannabis products. At best, drink a tonic and sleep it off.
4.) Exercise
According to the Anxiety & Depression Disorders of America, “Exercise and other physical activity produce endorphins — chemicals in the brain that act as natural painkillers — and also improve the ability to sleep, which in turn reduces stress.”
Getting up and moving can give a reprieve from an overabundance from a too-tipped scale of a sativa-dominant hyperarousal by giving the body and mind a way to physically express itself. Just be careful — if you are dizzy, this might not be a good idea. This is only a suggestion for anxiety without room spins.
