The leaves and the root are used to make medicine. Don't confuse marshmallow with the mallow (Malva sylvestris) flower and leaf.

Marshmallow leaf and root are used for pain and swelling (inflammation) of the mucous membranes that line the respiratory tract. They are also used for dry cough, inflammation of the lining of the stomach, diarrhea, stomach ulcers, constipation, urinary tract inflammation, and stones in the urinary tract.

People sometimes apply marshmallow leaf and root directly to the skin for pockets of infection (abscesses) and skin ulcers, and as a poultice for skin inflammation or burns, and for other wounds.

Marshmallow leaf is used topically as a poultice for insect bites. Marshmallow root comes from the marshmallow plant and looks like a brown, fibrous husk. The flowers, root, and leaves of the marshmallow plant are edible.

The medicinal properties of marshmallow root come from the mucilage, or sap-like substance, that the plant produces.
The mucilage of the plant contains antioxidants, and research suggests that it forms a coating over the skin and the digestive tract. By doing this, it may help with skin irritation and digestive issues, such as ulcers.

Soothing Marshmallow Root Tea [Recipe]

Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp marshmallow root
  • 1 Tbsp dried peppermint leaf
  • 2 cups of filtered water

Directions http://www.christinatidwell.com/blog/2019/6/4/gut-soothing-marshmal...

  1. Place all ingredients into a pint-size mason jar (if you have a bigger container feel free to double the recipe)
  2. Pour cold (or room temperature) filtered water over the herbs and fill to the top.
  3. Place in the fridge for a minimum of 3 hours. I usually make this before bed and allow it to steep overnight.
  4. Strain the herbs, and drink the tea cold.

Marshmallow Root Extract for the Treatment of Irritative Cough: Two Surveys on Users' View on Effectiveness and Tolerability].
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/30064132

Fink C, Schmidt M, Kraft K.

BACKGROUND:
Cough preparations containing aqueous marshmallow root extracts (Althaea Officinalis) have a long history as medicinal products in Germany. The aim of the 2 prospective, non-interventional surveys reported here was to create better documentation of the users' impression of the effectiveness and tolerability and user satisfaction.

METHODS:
Consumers (n = 822) buying either lozenges or syrup of the aqueous marshmallow root extract STW42 to treat their dry cough were recruited in pharmacies in 2 independently performed surveys. They were asked to fill in a questionnaire covering a treatment duration of 7 days so that the course of symptoms could be documented, and the overall effectiveness, tolerability, and satisfaction assessed.

RESULTS:
This consumer-reported outcome shows that both preparations showed a good effect with respect to the symptomatic treatment of oral or pharyngeal irritation and associated dry cough with a very rapid onset of effects, in the majority of cases within 10 min. The tolerability was very good (with only 3 minor adverse events for the syrup).

CONCLUSION:
The results of the surveys justify the long-established use of both marshmallow preparations for symptomatic treatment of dry cough.
