This Artist Beautifully Paints Scenes from the East during the 1800s

Edwin Lord Weeks is one of the most celebrated of the American Orientalists. Yet while a lot is on record concerning his professional career and travels, very little is known about his private life. It is known, however, that Weeks' parents were affluent spice and tea merchants from Newton, a suburb of Boston, Massachusetts. They are thought to have encouraged Weeks, and probably financed their son's interests in painting and travel.

 

 

In his younger years, he visited the Florida Keys to draw, and also traveled to Suriname in South America. His earliest works date back to 1867. He was just 18 years old at the time, however he had already begun to exhibit a dexterity of technique and an eye for composition. Throughout the years, he went on many voyages to the East. His journeys to this part of the world inspired him to create some unique and beautiful works of art.
